The PlayStation 2(PS2) is a sixth-generation video game console manufactured by Sony. Its development was announced in March 1999 and it was released a year later in Japan. Its primary competitors were Sega's Dreamcast, Microsoft's Xbox, and Nintendo's GameCube.

Sony unveiled its third major hardware revision (V12, model number SCPH-70000) in September 2004. It is smaller, thinner, and quieter than older versions and includes a built-in Ethernet port. It also has an integrated modem in some markets. It was first available in black. It was succeeded by V14 and V15 versions. In 2006, Sony released new hardware revisions which was first released in Japan on September 15, 2006, including the Silver edition. After its release in Japan, it was released in North America, Europe, and other parts of the world.

The new revision uses an integrated, unified EE+GS chip, a redesigned ASIC, a different laser lens, an updated BIOS, and updated drivers^. Sony started shipping a revision of the slim line PlayStation 2 (SCPH-79000)in 2007 which  features reduced weight of 600 grams compared to 900 grams of the SCPH-77001 (with Expansion Bay), achieved through a reduction in parts. The unit also uses a smaller motherboard as well as a custom ASIC which houses the Emotion Engine, Graphics Synthesizer, and the RDRAM. The AC adaptor's weight was also reduced to 250 grams from the 350 grams in the previous revision The PlayStation 2 slim line is also currently the only variant of the console being manufactured by Sony.

The new PlayStation 2 slimline is smaller and lighter than a hardcover book and bundles a few extra features that on the original PS2 required bulky hardware upgrades. It’s less than a quarter of the size of the original console with a dimension of 1.1 inches tall by 23 inches wide and by 6 inches deep. The unit's front panel is barely wide enough to include the two Memory Card slots, two controller ports, two USB ports, and power and disc-eject buttons too. If you want to use four controllers at the same time, you would definitely need an add-on adapter is a disadvantage even after its redesign.  A dedicated infrared receiver can be found with the front panel, which allows you to control the PS2's CD/DVD functionality using any one of several available remotes without losing one of the controller ports to an IR-receiver dongle, as was necessary with the first-gen PlayStation 2.
